These are the terms most relevant for an Excel class focused on cleaning and preparing data:
Cell – the basic unit in a spreadsheet where data is entered.
Column – vertical group of cells in a spreadsheet.
Row – horizontal group of cells in a spreadsheet.
Data set – a collection of data organized in rows and columns.
Autofit – a feature to automatically adjust row height or column width.
Replace – a tool to find specific text or values and replace them.
Formula – a calculation entered into a cell to process data.
Function – a predefined formula like
LOWER,TRIM, orPROPER.Lower – function to convert text to lowercase.
Trim – function to remove extra spaces from text.
Proper – function to capitalize the first letter of each word.
Paste as values – replacing formulas with their resulting values.
Text to columns – splitting a single column into multiple columns based on a delimiter.
Duplicate – repeated entries in a dataset that can be removed.
Blank cells – empty cells that can be filled with a placeholder like
N/A.IFERROR – function to handle errors in formulas.
Header row – the top row that contains column titles.
Formatting – changing appearance, such as bold, color, or gridlines.
Gridlines – the faint lines separating cells in a spreadsheet.
