    About Lesson

Use verb BE like a PRO

In English, every sentence needs a verb. When we describe a status, a role, or a condition, we use the verb BE.

    • I am (I’m)

    • He / She / It is (He’s / She’s / It’s)

    • We / You / They are (We’re / You’re / They’re)

Using Pronouns in a Business Context

    • He / She: Use for a colleague, a manager, or a client.

      • He is the Lead Developer.

      • She is the Project Manager.

    • It: Use for a report, a task, a tool, or a piece of data.

      • The report is long. It is very detailed.

      • The SQL query is slow. It is not optimized. (*SQL stands for Structured Query  /ˈkwɪr.i Language)

    • They: Use for people (colleagues) or plural things (results, charts, databases).

      • I checked the numbers. They are correct.

      • The stakeholders are here. They are in the meeting room.

    Contractions (Short Forms)

In meetings and emails, professionals often use short forms to sound more natural.

    Positive Contractions

    • I’m an analyst.

    • You’re the owner of this task.

    • The project’s (Project is) on track.

    • Data’s (Data is) the most important asset.

    Negative Contractions

    • I’m not responsible for this bug.

    • You aren’t (or You’re not) late for the sync.

    • The dashboard isn’t (or The dashboard’s not) updated yet.

    • The files aren’t (or They’re not) in the folder.

    Asking Questions & Short Answers

As a Business Analyst, your job is to ask questions. Start your “Yes/No” questions with Am / Is / Are.

    Yes/No Questions

    • Is the documentation ready?

      • Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t.

    • Are the results accurate?

      • Yes, they are. / No, they aren’t.

    • Am I on the invite list?

      • Yes, you are. / No, you’re not.

    Wh- Questions (Information Gathering)

    • Who is the product owner?

    • What is the main KPI for this month?

    • Where is the source file?

    • Why is the server down?

    • How is the new software?

When to use BE in Data Analytics

We use the verb BE to talk about:

    • Roles: I am a Junior Analyst. He is a Senior Stakeholder.

    • Project Status: The task is “In Progress.” The sprint is “Done.”

    • Data Quality: The numbers are inconsistent. The database is empty.

    • Locations: The files are on the cloud. The team is in the office.

    • Prices / Budget: The software license is $500. The project cost is high.

    • Time: The meeting is at 10:00 AM. The deadline is tomorrow.

    Important Rules for Ukrainian Speakers

In Ukrainian, we often skip the verb “to be” (e.g., “Я аналітик”). In English, this is a mistake. You must use AM/IS/ARE.

    • Correct: I am a specialist. (NOT: I specialist)

    • Correct: The data is clean. (NOT: Data clean)

Be Careful: Adjectives vs. Verbs Some words in Ukrainian look like actions (verbs), but in English, they are descriptions (adjectives). You must use the verb BE with them:

    • Be tired (втомитися): I am tired after the sprint.

    • Be ready (бути готовим): The presentation is ready.

    • Be interested in (цікавитися): He is interested in Python.

    • Be late (запізнюватися): The client is late.

    • Be sure (бути впевненим): I am sure about these metrics.

    • Be responsible for (відповідати за): They are responsible for the ETL process.

Pro-Tip: If you already have an action verb, do not use BE.

    • I agree. (NOT: I am agree)

    • I work with SQL. (NOT: I am work with SQL)
